Services will be held Saturday, February 8, at 2 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery. Reception immediately following the service at the home of Anne Doster, 818 Woodburn Rd.
Pat is survived by her son, John Booth Jr.; her daughter, Sara Booth, and Sara’s husband, Gary Panetta; her grandchild, Ellis Panetta; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and godchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, John Latham Booth, and her siblings, Arthur William Daniel Jr. and Faye Daniel Gassaway.
Pat was born in Nash County, North Carolina. She grew up on her family’s working farm, raising tobacco and chickens, and treasured the memories of her farm childhood. She brought farm skills with her to the city, sewing many of her children’s clothes as well as growing produce and canning vegetables, fruit, and jams (including jelly made from the fruit of the ornamental crabapple tree that grew in her Raleigh yard).
Pat attended East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C., and always regretted being unable to complete her degree. So after raising her children, she returned to college and earned a Business degree from Meredith College, Raleigh, N.C., in 1987.
She worked as an administrative assistant and bookkeeper for numerous companies in Rocky Mount, Greenville, Greensboro, and Raleigh. She especially enjoyed her time working for Raleigh Preschool and The North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office.
Pat was a longtime member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and served the church in many ways, including as a member of the Vestry and as Senior Warden. She was one of the founders of the St. Mark’s Memorial Garden and continued to be a board member and volunteer, doing everything from advising on plant types to helping pull weeds.
After John retired, the two of them traveled across the United States and Canada buying antiques and collectibles, which they sold in Raleigh shops and on eBay.
An avid, creative, and talented gardener, she loved the wildness and subtlety of her Raleigh garden, and knew the name of every bird that visited it.
Pat’s kindness and gentle spirit had a positive effect on all who knew her and will be forever remembered.
