Richard was born at Langley Air Force Base, in VA, to the late, Richard Arthur Hendren and Elizabeth Graham Hendren. His family moved to Raleigh from Evansville, Indiana when Richard was 9 years old to enroll at the Governor Morehead School, where he completed his formal education.
He was a lifelong and active member of Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh, particularly as a beloved member of Foundry Fellowship, which was a central part of his life.
Richard was actively involved for many years with the Raleigh Parks and Recreation choral singing group. Despite his physical limitations, Richard never let that define him. He lived a full and joyous life, experiencing traveling, attending concerts, reading, swimming, rooting for and attending many NC State athletic events, fishing, and developing meaningful and lifelong friendships. Richard had a great sense of humor and loved riddles.
He will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by cousins, Donald Hearn, Ninetta Basham and Lynn Basham; and friend, Neal Brantley.
Richard is survived by cousins, Dan Basham (Jennifer), Diane E. Brantley, Debbie J. Coffield (Steve), and Joyce Hearn; and many extended cousins, who dearly loved Richard.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 12th at 10:30 am at Edenton Street United Methodist Church, followed by a reception at the church.
A graveside service will be held the same day at 4:00 pm at Beaver Dam Cemetery, in McColl, SC, where he will be laid to rest next to his parents.
The family would like to thank staff at Springbrook Nursing & Rehab and Cardinal Hospice Care for their loving care of Richard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Edenton Street United Church, the Governor Morehead School Foundation, or to Raleigh Parks and Recreation.
