Russell W. Tarlton III, “Rusty,” 56, of Cary, North Carolina passed away on November 20, 2025. He was born on December 21, 1968, in Raleigh, North Carolina, and grew up surrounded by family who cherished his gentle spirit, humor and remarkable gifts.
Rusty was a naturally talented musician whose effortless ability at the piano and keyboard captivated everyone who heard him play. Self-taught and gifted with a rare ear for music, he could bring a room to life with just a few notes. Music was one of the truest expressions of who he was.
He was also a gifted storyteller and short-story writer. Rusty created imaginative stories and often paired them with videos he produced himself – small worlds he built to entertain, comfort and inspire. His creativity flowed from the same deep well of sensitivity that defined him.
Known for having “the biggest heart,” as his father often said, Rusty had a kindness that drew children and animals to him instantly. His warmth and gentle nature made people feel safe and loved and his presence will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Rusty retired as a partner in the family business, where he worked with dedication and loyalty alongside those he loved most.
Friendship was one of the great joys of Rusty’s life. He shared a lifelong bond with friends since childhood – friends from junior high, high school and into adulthood – who remained “thick as thieves” throughout their lives together. He loved them deeply and considered them family: Cindi Powell, Steve Whitehead and Joe Remicci.
He is survived by his best friend and loving husband, Robert Terrell, and by his sister, Diana Tarlton. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell W. Tarlton Jr. and Dianne N. Tarlton.
Rusty’s memory will forever remain a blessing. His music, his stories and his great heart leave a lasting imprint on everyone who was fortunate enough to share life with him.
