Ruth Champion Lancaster, 87, passed away on Monday morning, February 24, 2020 at Transitions LifeCare in Raleigh. Born on March 8, 1932 in Newberry, South Carolina; she was the daughter of the late Walter and Minnie Champion. She was the wife of the late Coleman Harrison Lancaster, Sr. They had been married for 48 years at his passing in 2007.
She went to Broughton High School in Raleigh and then to Meredith College where she double majored in Religion and Physical Education. She was working for the Red Cross in Virginia when she met her future husband and they married in 1959. They started a family while living in Birmingham Alabama, where both Harrison Jr. and Robert were born. The family moved back to Raleigh from Bowie Maryland in 1972. She went to work for ITT where she eventually was a managing supervisor before the company was bought by Alcatel. Upon retiring she took great pride in her six grandchildren, often showing off their accomplishments to anyone interested. Ruth loved watching sports with her husband and family, reading the newspaper, especially doing the crossword puzzle. Upon her husbands passing, she started making flag cases for veteran's families through some private donations and made close to a hundred by hand. As her health was declining, she and her granddaughter Christiana made it a point to watch Jeopardy together each night.
She is lovingly remembered by her children: C. Harrison Lancaster, Jr. and wife Dawn, of Youngsville, NC; Robert C. Lancaster and wife Anna, of Marshall, Michigan. Grandchildren: Corey of Princeton, NC, Christiana of Raleigh, NC, Rachael of Marshall, MI, Stuart (Kalee) of Marshall, MI, Harrison III of Youngsville, NC and Jackson of Youngsville, NC.
Graveside Funeral Rites will be held on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at 12:30 pm at Raleigh Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ruth’s memory may be made to Transitions LifeCare – 250 Hospice Circle – Raleigh, NC 27607.
