Mrs. Sadie Cameron Smith, wife of the late Henry Smith departed this earthy life on Friday, August 8, 2014 at the Rex Healthcare Hospital, NC. Sadie’s health was declining for the last several years and until recently she received care from her son Henry who faithful took care of his mother. She was a quiet woman who loved to sit outside in her chair and enjoy God’s creation. She was never one to love a lot of crowds or much noise and tried to live a Godly simple life. For as long as her health would allow, she attended Baptist Grove Church and faithfully worked in the kitchen and food ministry serving, cooking, cleaning for members and families at celebrations and funerals. According to her family, she was a quiet woman who did not like a lot of loud talking. She preferred to talk with you rather than on the cell phone. Family members could talk with her about anything.
Sadie was born in Harnett County near Erwin of December 8, 1920 to the late Annie Lee McLean and Dave Cameron. She grew up on the farm in Erwin, North Carolina and was educated at Gentry Elementary School located in Erwin, NC. Like many children of color, Sadie had to drop out of school at an early age to work on the farm and assist with the family. Later she met and married Henry Smith and to this union were born nine children of which three are deceased – Curtis, James and Janie. Left to cherish her memory are: Maxine Freeman (Otis), Louise Smith; Henry Smith, and Larry Smith (Novella) all of Raleigh; Annie Lee Wright of Lillington, NC; and Carolyn Monroe (Larry) of Willow Springs, NC. In addition she is survived by a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren along with nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
She confessed Jesus Christ at an early age in Harnett County and after relocating to Raleigh united with Baptist Grove Church where she faithfully served until her health began to fail.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 13th from 11:30am to 12:00pm prior to funeral services at 12:00pm at Baptist Grove Church, 7109 Leesville Road, Raleigh, entombment will follow the service at Raleigh Memorial Park.
