
She was born on August 20,1946 in Kansas City, Missouri. After living in Iowa, Boston, and Montana, Sandra made Raleigh, North Carolina her home for most of her life. She dedicated her career to education, professional development, and strengthening families and communities across North Carolina.
Sandra earned both her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from the University of North Caolina at Greensboro. She later completed advanced graduate work and received her EdD in education at North Carolina State University, further deepening her commitment to teaching, leadership, and community involvement.
She built a distinguished career with North Carolina Cooperative Extension at North Carolina State University, where she served in multiple leadership roles, including Housing Specialist, District Extension Director for the South- Central District, and Associate Director for Families and Youth. She retired in 2006 from NCSU where she was Department Head and Associate Director Emerita.
Through her work, she supported and mentored extension professionals statewide, championed family and consumer sciences education, and strengthened outreach programs serving communities across North Carolina.
In recognition of her significant contributions, she received the NC State Alumni Association Outstanding Extension Award. Her impact was further honored through the establishment of the Dr. Sandra Zaslow Professional Development Award, supporting Family and Consumer Science Agents in their continued professional growth-a lasting testament to her dedication to mentorship and excellence.
Sandra was known for her intellect, integrity, and steady leadership. She believed deeply in the transformative power of education and was generous with her time and guidance. Colleagues remember her as a thoughtful mentor and advocate; friends and family remember her warmth, strength, and quiet determination.
She is survived by her loving husband, Steve Zaslow; her brother, Jarles Alberg, and his wife Joni. She will be remembered with deep gratitude by many individuals whose lives she influenced.
