Mrs. Sarah Lynn McCabe Calleson, 83 of Raleigh, NC passed away peacefully at home on May 28, 2021 surrounded by her loving family. Sarah Lynn was the daughter of Franklin Lionel McCabe and Gertrude Tarleton McCabe, both of NC.
She was preceded in death by her husband Donald A. Calleson. She is survived by her daughter, Lynn Powell Schultz and husband W. Robert Schultz, and son Thomas Cox Powell, IV and wife Cynthia Koon Powell, all of Raleigh; and by her grandchildren Robert Burleson Schultz and wife Susan Webb Schultz of Morehead City, William McCabe Schultz and fiancée Kathryn Lynn Waitt of Raleigh, and Thomas Cox Powell, V of Raleigh, and her beloved dog Mary Rose, of the home.
Sarah Lynn graduated from Seabreeze High School in Daytona Beach, Florida (go Sand Crabs!) and attended the University of Florida. She always considered these years as some of the best of her life. She learned to drive on the beach at Daytona. She loved sharing stories of those times in the 50’s, going to football games with friends, prom and just being young and happy. One funny story was about riding around town in a friend’s old car they called the “black beast”. It had transmission problems, so they had to open the hood at stoplights and manually put the car back in first gear in order to proceed when the light turned green. She said they would be in hysterics doing this. She really had a wonderful sense of humor.
Sarah Lynn worked as an independent interior decorator and for Carolina Builders interior department where she was affectionately known as “Otis”. Later, she supported her children working as an assistant to the Principal at Daniels Middle School.
As a retired interior decorator, she continued to enjoy working her magic in her home. Constantly improving, rearranging furniture and searching for “Blue and White”. She called this playing and created a beautiful home. She also was a talented artist, specializing in oil paintings.
She has always been a beach girl and loved being at Atlantic Beach collecting seashells and enjoying the water. She loved spending time with her family, especially summers and Christmases in Oriental NC, where her father was born.
The family would like to thank Dr. Susan Moore of UNC Rex and caregivers Charlotte and Nahid.
A Memorial Service and reception will be held on June 3rd, 2021, at 1:00 pm at Brown Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary’s Street Raleigh NC 27605 followed by a short graveside service at Oakwood Cemetery.
