

Shirley Gosselin Hodges, 91, passed away Thursday, January 7, in her home at The Oaks at Whitaker Glen. She was born Shirley Ann Gosselin April 22, 1924, in Davenport Iowa, to Ruth Hallauer and Harold Lee Gosselin. Her family moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 1929. She was educated in the Winston-Salem public schools, graduating from R.J. Reynolds High School in 1940. She attended Salem College and Women’s College of the University of North Carolina (now UNC-G). Prior to her marriage she worked as a secretary for Reynolds Tobacco Company.
She married Luther C. Hodges on June 24, 1950 in Winston-Salem, and they were happily married for 44 years until his death in 1994. She was a homemaker and later worked for Motors Insurance Corporation until retirement. Shirley was devoted to her family and blessed with numerous friends through the Pinewood Garden Club, the Highlanders, her Sunday School Class, Church Circle and most recently, by the residents and staff at Whitaker Glen.
Shirley is survived by her five children Ann Hodges (Stan Meyer), Bob Hodges (Valerie), Bill Hodges (Susan), Eddie Hodges (Alane), and Ruth Ellen Gill (Thold), two sisters, Phyllis Slawter of Winston-Salem and Barbara Grimes (Doug) of Great Falls, Virginia; twelve grandchildren, Christopher Hodges (Allison), Elizabeth Buchholz (Keith), John Hodges (Sarah), Lauren Vukina (Joe), Julia Hodges, Lisa Meyer, Caroline Gill, Michael Hodges, Laura Gill, Ethan Hodges, Catherine Gill, and Annika Hodges; and four great grandchildren, Bridger Hodges, Rory Buchholz, Luka Vukina and Eirnin Buchholz.
A celebration of her life will be held at Highland United Methodist Church, Raleigh, NC, on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at 3 p.m. Visitation with the family will follow in the Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to her beloved church, Highland United Methodist, 1901 Ridge Rd, Raleigh, NC 27607 or Meals on Wheels of Wake County, 1001 Blair Drive, Suite 100 Raleigh, NC 27603, where Shirley volunteered for over twenty years.
