Thank you all for your kind words. This was what I had prepared to say at the funeral:

At whatever stage of life you met Simone, you probably remember her as a beautiful woman. She grew up in the crucible of forces leading up to World War II and brought children into the world just before the bombs began to fall. She lived in Texas and here in North Carolina in a time we grandchildren can hardly imagine. And still, what I remember about my grandmother was how her keen intelligence yearned to find expression. 

It came out in political arguments that taught me that disagreement and challenge could keep your mind open; in 
reading about new discoveries with her as she instantly started guessing what might come next; in looking at bugs from the pool or the soggy baby animals her dogs brought up onto the porch—bugs and animals that always found room in her house until her children and grandchildren to check them out.

I remember she spent hours preparing for her public appearances, and that she always left the house as beautiful as she could be. But what I loved about her were the stolen moments when she didn't have her make-up on—the kisses on the cheek that she'd wave away while secretly pleased; the teasing jokes between her and George that made her so mad while she was laughing. 

I challenged her many times, and we didn't see eye to eye, but I always knew she was thinking about what I said, and I knew, when I spoke with her, I couldn't use a lazy argument or slip something past. She could even change her mind about deeply held opinions, rare though that might be, and that's a talent we all need to cultivate.

I hope that we can all carry away that part of her along with the images on these photographs that can only show her beauty: her challenging, burning spirit.

It was a privilege and cherished honor to know her and her family. May her loved ones be a source of comfort and support for one another in her absence.

So many wonderful memories of Semi, her love for her horses, her pride in her children, and her devotion to Dr. Corbin. She had an incredible life and was a delight to know.

I was very sad to hear of Simone's passing.  I remember a lively vibrant person from my youth and thoughout my life.  My condolences to all the family, especially little Simone, Daniel and Breanna.
