Predeceased by his son; Damon Caputo and his parents Anita and Thomas Caputo. Tom is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Marge; Daughters, Belinda Stern (Michael) and Carla Dodd, Daughter-in-law, Krissy Caputo; Grandchildren; Alexa Fagan (Ricky), Mitchell and Kailyn Stern, Gillian DeLeon, Tanner (Emily), Jacob, Noah and Avari Caputo; Great grandson; Miles Fagan.
Tom grew up in Borough Park, Brooklyn, New York, the only son of the late Anita and Thomas Caputo. After high school, he joined the United States Navy in 1958. He met Marge while they served in Arlington, Virginia, and they started their six-decade love story. They married in 1962 and he began a thirty-year career with UPS. As Tom excelled at his job in customer service, Marge, in turn became an expert mover. Promotions led to time in Maryland, Montana, Pennsylvania, Germany, and New Jersey to name a few.
During this time Marge and Tom raised their 3 children, Belinda, Carla and Damon. Upon retiring from UPS, Tom and Marge moved to Scottsdale where he started his second career for 10 years as Sargent of Arms at the Arizona House of Representatives. After retiring as Sargent of Arms, he went on to be a Greeter at the Boulders Resort in Scottsdale. The perfect job for his out-going, chatty personality.
Tom worked hard to provide a wonderful life for his family. Helping to instill values such as doing your best no matter how small the task, organization, and treating people with respect. Tom always said, “You can get so much farther with someone with honey than vinegar.” He made friends wherever he went, he was a natural “schmoozer”. Tom was adored by his family, always giving the grandkids a few dollars for “pizza money”.
When he retired for good, Tom and Marge settled in Raleigh where they live today. He was an avid storyteller and the grandkids always enjoyed hearing about his antics in the neighborhood growing up and his escapades in the Navy. He was smart and compassionate and his family will miss his twinkling eyes and warm, handsome smile.
The Caputo family would like to thank the incredibly compassionate nurses and doctors at Duke ICU for their devoted care of Tom.
