Verne was born in Laconia, NH in 1916 and spent his childhood in Franklin, NH.
After high school he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC’s) where he worked to build roads and maintain the forests in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
He was a veteran of WWII having served in the Army Air Corps as a radio operator, achieving the rank of sergeant. Following his service in the Army, Verne attended Electronics School in Washington DC. Upon graduation he went to work for WRC (NBC) in Washington as a broadcast engineer in the early days of television. In his job, Verne met many interesting people and was present at many notable events including several presidential inaugural balls.
Verne married Ann Hoppe in 1943 and, following the war, they made their home in Arlington, VA. Here they raised their family and established many lifelong friendships. They spent weekends at their small mountain cabin in Chester Gap, VA. that continued to be their getaway place long into retirement.
After retiring from NBC Verne and Ann moved to Palm Coast, FL where he enjoyed playing golf, fishing, and volunteering in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. In 1991 they moved to Raleigh to be close to their family. Verne was an active member of Knights of Columbus and the Raleigh Fun Golfers for many years.
He was preceded in death by his wife. He is survived by his son, Verne (II), and his wife, Barbara; two grandchildren, Gail Gastineau (David) of Kentucky and David (Katie) of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, and his great grandson, Jackson.
Verne will be laid to rest in Virginia. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
