

He was born in Raleigh, NC, March 22, 1932.
He is predeceased by his parents, William Isaac Procter and Katherine Haywood Baker Procter; as well as his grandparents, Katherine Haywood Baker, Ivan and Lucy Procter; and family members, Jarvis Procter, Doris Procter Bason and Robert Shepard.
Known to most as Bill, he was educated at Ravenscroft School, Woodberry Forest School, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University School of Medicine. He received his postgraduate degree training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and residency and fellowship at the University of North Carolina Memorial Hospital at Chapel Hill.
From 1957 to 1961, he served as senior medical officer in the US Navy on the US Naval Destroyer Squadron 30.
Bill was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Life Insurance Medicine, and he was a member of the American College of Physicians and the American Society of Internal Medicine. He served as associate clinical professor of medicine at UNC Wake Hospital with the teaching service. He was co-medical director of the American Defender Life Insurance Company with Dr. Robert Gaddy.
For 38 years, he practiced at Boylan Internal Medicine, which he co-founded with Dr. Robert Gaddy. They were joined by doctors Johnston, Edmunson, Hardison, Wehbie and Smithson.
Bill served on the North Carolina Board of Directors of Occupational Therapists, the Board of Friends of Haywood Hall. He was a member of life-long Christ Episcopal Church, and an officer and member of the Society of Cincinnati.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Happy Procter; his children Whit Procter (Kathy) and Emily Procter (Paul); his Virginia family: Hillary Horn (Jack), Madison (Sasha), Max, Abigail and Allison Thompson; and his cherished granddaughter, Pippa Procter Bryan. He is also survived by his step-grandchildren, Emily and Nick Marley and his former wife, Barbara Taylor Jones.
Bill spent his life in service to those around him. His professional and personal dedication to the well-being of others will be remembered with the highest regard.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 12th at 2pm at Christ Church, 120 E. Edenton St., Raleigh, NC 27601. A reception will follow the service at The Carolina Country Club in Raleigh. Private interment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, Children's Home Society of NC, or to the Rex Hospital Foundation.
