Rev. William Buxton Whisnant

Dr. Bill Whisnant passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on September 21, 2025, at the age of 89. He led a full life and leaves behind a special legacy. He grew up in Raleigh, NC, and graduated from Broughton High School, class of 1954. After graduation from UNC-CH, he worked for Western Electric, General Electric, Bell South, and AT&T, followed by retirement. During the time he was working, both he and his wife Birute and daughter Kristi participated in weekend Lay Renewals, where he ministered to many people.

After retirement, his highlight was completing a Doctor of Ministry at Southeastern Baptist Seminary. His dissertation was in church planting. He took that information and love for Jesus, and planted a church in The Villages, Florida. He spent much time in God's Word and led many people to the Lord. He had a witty sense of humor and told many "rabbit" jokes. He loved his family so well and cherished his grandchildren. He was a giver and didn't hesitate to help when someone needed it. He was a peaceful man, humble and soft spoken. While we are sad at his passing and miss him terribly, we do not mourn as others mourn. We are confident that he is in heaven, and we will see him again. The angels are rejoicing. God Himself is saying, "Well done, my good and faithful servant!"

He was predeceased by his parents, G. Locke and Elise Whisnant.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Birute; daughter, Kristi; grandchildren, Christopher and Hannah; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 1st from 1pm - 2pm in The Harbor at Providence Baptist Church, 6339 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC. The funeral service will follow the visitation, beginning at 2pm at Providence. Services will conclude with the interment at Oakwood Cemetery.
