Zua Bright Hockaday Moore, 90, passed away after a brief illness on Sunday March 3, 2013 at Rex Hospital, surrounded by family and her minister. Zua was born September 4, 1922 in Rowland NC and was raised by her parents Robert Clellan Hockaday and Lula Bright Johnson Hockaday in Benson, NC. After her parents’ deaths, she lived in Coats, NC with her Aunt Ora Johnson Byrd and Uncle Fred Byrd. After attending Campbell College, she moved to Raleigh where she worked for a physician. In 1944 she married her husband of 69 years, Jack Franklin Moore.
Zua was an intelligent and energetic person who above all else cherished her family and her church. She loved life, pursued knowledge with a passion, enjoyed traveling in North Carolina and around the world and never met a stranger. She was an accomplished cook and gracious hostess with a flair for making everyone feel welcome in her home. Her bright smile and passion for conversation enabled her to easily meet people who rarely forgot the experience. Her first questions to strangers were usually, “Where are you from and where do you go to church?” She was bold, enthusiastic, generous and caring and will be greatly missed by her loving family and many, many friends.
Zua Moore is survived by her devoted husband, Jack Franklin Moore; daughter Nancy Moore Phillips and husband Bobby of Selma, NC; son Richard Franklin Moore of Raleigh; son David Edmund Moore and wife Ann of Charleston, SC; grandchildren David Moore, Jr., Sarah Elizabeth Moore and Ann-Davis Moore of Charleston, SC; step-grandsons Rob Phillips of Raleigh and Ryan Phillips of Florida; sister Grace Hockaday Stein of Wilmington, NC; sister Sally Hockaday Stapleford of Kinston, NC; nieces Joan Hockaday Watson of Charlotte, Ann Bright Hockaday of Virginia, and Donna Stapleford-Cannon of Kinston; nephews Bob Hockaday of Texas, Tom Hockaday of Rhode Island and Bill Stapleford, Jr. of Kinston; and close family friend, E. Wayne White of Raleigh. Zua was predeceased by her parents, and her brothers, Robert and William Hockaday, both from Texas.
The family will receive visitors at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary’s Street, Raleigh, NC on Thursday March 7 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
