With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Darrell Ronald Harper, age 83, of Brimfield, Ohio who went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 30, 2025, after a short and courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his beloved family at University Hospitals Portage Medical Center in Ravenna, Ohio.
Darrell was born in Mingo Junction, Ohio, to Martin Luther Harper and Helen Virginia (Morrison) Harper. He spent his childhood in the hills of West Virginia, before returning to Ohio, where he became a long‑time resident of Brimfield.
Darrell is survived by his loving wife, Lucy Jane (Olin) Harper, with whom he would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in September. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and enduring commitment.
Darrell is also survived by his children, Scott (Chrissie) Harper of Ravenna, OH, and Bethany (Sean) Darby of Brimfield, OH; grandchildren, Joshua, Eli, and Michael Harper; Brett and Ryan Darby; Nathan Ledford, and Natalie Nutter, along with several great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Joyce Ann Randolph of Weirton, WV, and Carol Tucker of Gettysburg, PA, as well as numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved brother, James G. Harper, many aunts and uncles, and his cherished dog, Panda.
Darrell retired after almost 44 years at Ferry Industries, where his dedication, work ethic, and integrity were admired by all who knew him.
Darrell had a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life. He loved good food, especially chocolate and cake—treats that brought a smile to his face no matter the occasion. He was an avid admirer of model trains. He found peace in tinkering in his workshop. If something needed fixing, Darrell was known for his ability to hillbilly rig it, always finding a creative and practical solution with whatever he had on hand. He also enjoyed the outdoors—whether it was mowing the lawn, riding his bike, or spending time on a new project. But above all, Darrell cherished his family.
Darrell’s life was full of moments that brought him joy, and he never hesitated to help others whenever they needed it. His love for people and his willingness to lend a hand defined his character, making him a true friend and a reliable source of support for all who knew him.
A longtime member of Bridge Bible Church in Kent, Ohio, Darrell’s faith in Jesus Christ was the cornerstone of his life. He was deeply involved in the church and known for his quiet strength, willingness to serve, and readiness to offer encouragement or a helping hand to others.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St. in Ravenna, Ohio from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Family and friends are invited to join us in honoring Darrell’s life and legacy.
