Denis “Deny” Gaynor, 84, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, June 30, 2025, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his devoted daughter, Rachel Spence, and her husband, Jerry Spence; his brother, Bill Gaynor, and sister-in-law, Maryann; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, William and Mary Gaynor, and his sister, Marilyn White.
Born on September 9, 1940, in Barberton, Ohio, Deny was the son of William and Mary Gaynor. After graduating from Barberton High School, he proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served as an air traffic controller at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Michigan. Following his military service, he went on to have a long and successful career at General Tire in Akron, Ohio, where he worked as Supervisor in the R&D Pilot Lab. He retired after more than 25 years of dedicated service.
Known affectionately by many as “Red,” Deny was a man of boundless curiosity and deep appreciation for nature. A passionate outdoorsman, he found joy and meaning in the wide-open landscapes of the American West—rockhounding, fishing, deer hunting, and exploring every corner he could reach. He was a certified rifle and shotgun instructor and took great pride in teaching gun safety to Boy Scouts, fostering respect and responsibility in young marksmen.
Deny was also a licensed pilot and certified flight instructor, finding freedom in the skies just as he did in the wilderness. Among his fondest memories were visits to his parents in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, annual autumn hunting trips with his brother, nephews and nephew-in-law, rockhounding adventures across the country, and holiday gatherings filled with family, laughter, and tradition.
Those who knew Deny would describe him as fiercely loyal, deeply selfless, unmistakably unique, and delightfully ornery. A “walking encyclopedia,” he had a sharp mind and a gift for sharing knowledge—whether practical, historical, or obscure. His constant companion, Boo, a rescued miniature chihuahua, remained faithfully by his side until the very end.
Deny’s life touched many—family, friends, colleagues, and countless others who crossed his path. His legacy lives on in the memories he created, the lessons he shared, and the quiet strength he carried. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Mass of Christian Burial, officiated by Rev. William Kraynak, will be held at 11am on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at Immaculate Conception Church, 409 W. Main St., Ravenna, Ohio, 44266.
