Doris Kay Hall Shutler

Doris Kathleen Hall Shutler, the oldest of six children, was born on January 2, 1916, to John William Hall and Lillian Marie (Curtis) Hall in Summerfield, Ohio. The family soon moved to Canton, Ohio, where they lived until 1926.

At that time, the Hall family moved to Kent, Ohio, where Kathleen attended the Kent State University High School; and, after graduation there, received her A.B., B.S. and M.A. degrees at Kent State University.

After graduation she taught school at Tallmadge and at Mesopotamia until her marriage in 1941 to Walter Joseph (Jack) Shutler of Ravenna. After their marriage they established a home in Ravenna.

The Shutler’s had two daughters; Judith Lee (Shutler) Culler and Sally Ann (Shutler) Jones. When Walter enlisted in the Navy during World War II, Kathleen returned to teaching at Randolph for four years then at Ravenna High for nine years. There she served as president of RTA.

Kay then taught at Kent Roosevelt High School. While at Roosevelt she was named a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar in 1966-67. After 40 years of teaching she retired in 1981.

Kay was active in Delta Kappa Gamma, (an honorary society for women educators); a life member of the Ohio Education Association; a member of both the American Association for Retired Persons (AARP) and the Portage County Retired Teachers.

Kay's free time was often devoted to bowling and golfing for recreation. She enjoyed cooking and loved family gatherings for holidays and birthday celebrations.

Kay is survived by her 2 daughters, 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received on Thursday, June 9, 2011, from 10:00 AM until the 11:00 AM funeral service officiated by Reverend Wayne Enders at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna.
