Dorothy will certainly be missed! She had the most wonderful sense of humor! She was a pillar of our church and it won't be the same without her. God was waiting for her with open arms. May God bring comfort to her entire family.

Dorothy Gay was such a great woman. My time I spent at Jim and Dorothy's place was the best. My wedding happened there. No better people on this planet.

I first knew Jim and Dorothy as Mr. & Mrs. Gay when I was a youngster in Atwater, Ohio.  My father, Rev. Dr. Jerry Butcher was the pastor of the Methodist church to which the Gay family belonged. At some point as a pre-teen, my parents took me to Jim & Dorothy's private airport to watch the skydivers that the Gays most graciously allowed to utilize their runway and property for many years during the 1970s and early 1980s. 

The thrill I vicariously experienced that day led me to start skydiving in 1977 at Gay Field with the Akron Skydivers. By 1981-82, I was a licensed jumper and skydived at Gay field every weekend and numerous times during weekday evenings.  It was there that I met a number of lifelong friends and as a young adult, I became better acquainted with the Gays. Still today, I consider Jim and Dorothy to be among my earliest mentors, simply because they tolerated skydivers on their property every weekend. I believe that this was due to their life long love of anything related to aviation.  Their acceptance in hosting a skydiving club at their private airport was unique in those days, and is unheard of today.  I eventually ended up as the president of the club and through a lengthy evolution, the club was transformed into one of the most successful skydiving centers in Ohio. I enjoyed all of it even though the latter transformation was well after the days spent at Gay field. Nonetheless, the inspiration for everything I have accomplished, started via the graciousness of Jim and Dorothy Gay.    

In 2010, we had a reunion of the old Akron Skydivers club and of course we invited Jim & Dorothy. I was thrilled to speak in front of this group of my old friends and mentors.  Jim & Dorothy still felt connected enough to the original Akron Skydivers club that they attended this reunion dinner.  It was an honor for me to recognize them as the people who hosted our club which in turn led to my 30 year career as a skydiver and a drop zone operator. I remember stating that the old time club operations hosted by the Gays at their private field were the best times of my life. Had it not been for my parents taking me to Gay field to watch skydivers one summer afternoon, I would never have been involved in skydiving and would never have built a skydiving center years later during the 1990s.  I have retired from skydiving, but my wife still operates AerOhio Skydiving which was created from the remnants of the original Akron Skydivers Club.  This club would never have survived through the 70s and early 80s without the generosity and kindness of JIm and Dorothy Gay.  May God welcome Dorothy and bless and comfort Jim during this time of loss of his wonderful wife and companion.
