She was born October 21, 1942, in Youngstown, Ohio, to parents James Leslie and Florence (Ayers) Gordon. She was affectionately known as Vicki to her family and friends. Vicki and her sister Betty would help their mother clean homes as young girls. Eventually the girls ended up together in a children’s home. When the home closed, Vicki was raised by her sister and her husband, Majors Joyce and Ken Lance, who guided her through their leadership.
She entered the training college and was in the Servants of Christ Session and Followers of Christ Session. Vicki was an assistant officer with the Salvation Army in Wilkes-Barre, where she happened to bump into a newly discharged Air Force veteran, Joe White Jr. On July 30, 1967, they were married in Harrisburg and together they raised two children.
Vicki served as a Major in the Salvation Army and devoted much of her life to their cause. She also enjoyed listening to music, playing the piano, and crocheting. Vicki was an avid book reader as well. She retired in 2008 and moved from Wilkes-Barre to Ravenna in 2013 to be closer to her children.
Vicki is survived by her husband Joe White Jr., her daughter Christine (Stephan) Gonzales, her son JJ (Merrie) White, her grandchildren: Matthew White, Stephanie (Nate) Miller, J. Jay White, and Jared White, her great-grandchildren Lucas Russell and Aliyah Russell, as well as her sister Betty (Mike) Economy.
Vicki was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Joyce (Ken) Lance.
Her wishes for cremation are being honored. A Service of Life will be officiated by Lt. Col. Jim Reynolds and Major Bea Connell at the Salvation Army Akron Citadel, 190 South Maple Street, Akron, OH 44302, on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at 11:00 AM with a time of fellowship to follow.
