

He was born April 5, 1930, in Barberton, Ohio, to parents George Bradley and Lily (Linton) Black. Van began working at 13, and was a well-known butcher throughout the area, retiring from Giant Eagle after 48 combined years of meat cutting.
Van was an active member of the Rootstown community. He served as a member of the Volunteer Fire Department, including 8 years as the Captain, and also as a zoning inspector for the township. He was a member of St. Peter of the Fields Parish and the Knights of Columbus.
Van was a member of Ravenna Elks 1076. He enjoyed gardening, bowling, and playing cards. He will fondly be remembered for his sense of humor.
Van is survived by his beloved wife Mary Jane (Knapp), whom he married on June 21, 1948. Also surviving are his children: Ramona (Jerry) Wise, Daniel (Sue) Black, Rebecca (Chris) Reminder, Denise (John) Burks; his daughter-in-law Linda Black; his sister Kathleen (Gerald) Platt, and his brother George (Janice) Black, as well as 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father George Black, his mother Lily Maciel, his son Van-Note Black Jr., and his sister Karen Maciel.
Friends will be received Sunday, March 6, 2016, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna, and on Monday from 10:00 – 11:00 AM at St. Peter of the Fields Catholic Church, 3487 Old Forge Rd., Rootstown. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Reverend David Misbrener on Monday at 11:00 AM. Private burial will take place at Homeland Cemetery in Rootstown.
