

Beloved wife, cherished mother and endeared friend, Virginia Dorothy Dunckel, 96, of Ravenna, Ohio, passed to Heaven on February 10, 2017. Virginia was born on September 9, 1920 in Framingham, Massachusetts to the late Dr. Harold S. and Ethel Robinson Cole. Following graduation from Roessleville High School (which was replaced by Colonie Central HS in Colonie, New York) she attended the highly-accredited Mildrey Elley School where she acquired business and secretarial skills which prepared her to successfully serve as secretary for the manager of the Hotel Van Curier in Schenectady, New York.
Virginia and George Paul Dunckel were united in marriage on September 6, 1941 at the United Methodist Church in Albany, New York, by her future Father-in-law, the Reverend R. Emerson Dunckel. Shortly after moving to Ravenna in 1957, Virginia became employed by Kent State University (KSU) where she advanced to secretary for Dr. Michael Swartz and was his secretary when he became the president of KSU. Virginia retired in 1983 after 25 years of service. A life-long Christian and faithful servant of God, Virginia was a member of the First United Methodist Church the most of her life. She served on numerous church committees and also sang in the choir. A former member of the Ravenna Literary Guild, Virginia enjoyed writing short stories and was honored when her story about an event at a Seven Step Prison Program in Mansfield, Ohio appeared in an accredited national publication. She also had one Children’s story published in book form. Virginia’s love for sports began during her late son Roy’s football career at Ravenna High School where she never missed a game. She was also an avid fan of the Kent State Flashes, and became a ROR Club Member, attending most basketball and football games with her husband. She also had a heart for animals and supported the Portage County APL.Virginia was a woman of great faith. In addition to praying for those in need, she read the Bible and enjoyed memorizing scripture and managed to memorize the entire book of Ephesians as well as Psalm 51.
In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her eldest son, Air Force Captain Roy Stephen Dunckel, who had lived in Tyler, Texas. Husband George Paul Dunckel, her very loyal 14 year old dog SPOT Dunckel whom she loved to pet for hours. She is survived by her faithful and loyal son Hank Dunckel as well as nieces and nephews in eight states. Virginia is also survived by her Cousin, Dorothy King of Framingham, Massachusetts.
Hank Dunckel would like to THANK the following people for all their care and friendship over her 10 year Battle with Dementia. First, Dr. William A. Pakan M.D. that gave her so many extra years being able to walk. Embassy Longmeadow Care Center in Ravenna, OH. All the Administrators, Nurses and Aids and so many Club Members and Family who gave so much attention. Mrs. Lois Eisle and her Hospice Care people that help her and the family members thru this trying time living with Dementia. Last but NOT least are Mrs. Betty Parker and Ms. Terry Thomas who spent many hours of friendship with my mother.
Cremation has taken place. Friends will be received on Sunday, February 26, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church, 263 S Prospect Street, Ravenna, from 2:00 pm until the Memorial Service beginning at 3:00pm with Pastor Steve Sparling and Reverend Sam Goebel officiating. Final burial will be at the Fort Plain City Cemetery in Fort Plain, New York. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made either to Youth Ministries at the First United Methodist Church, 263 S Prospect Street, Ravenna, OH 44266 OR Attn: Activities Fund / Embassy Longmeadow Care Center / 565 Bryn Mawr Street Ravenna, OH 44266.
