

Caryll (“Whip”) R. Whipple, 89, was called home by his Lord on February 7, 2017. He was born in Altoona, PA on October 12, 1927 to Carl E. Whipple and Marion (Robbins) Whipple. He is predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Jean E (Smith) Whipple. He is known by his family and friends as a man who excelled in loyalty to his God, country, and family, and in humility and generosity. He was a Micah 6:8 man. He also was a master of the “punny” joke!
Whip was an honors graduate of the class of 1950 from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. In 1961, he received his doctorate in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois. Whip was a decorated veteran of the Vietnam conflict, as a Seabee Commander (NMBC#3). In 1980, he retired from military service to Fairfax, VA, and to the Highlands in Wyomissing in 2012, where he delighted in new church families and the blessings of volunteer service.
Surviving are daughters Elizabeth (Whipple), MD, wife of Robert M. Brackbill MD and Laurie (Whipple), PhD, wife of Bruce DeMarco; 2 adopted daughters from the Philippines Jean Marie (Whipple) Castro and Hilda Jean (Whipple) Hill; sons Stephen Whipple, Andrew Whipple husband of Donna, and Daniel Whipple husband of Christina; sister Nancy (Whipple) Erbland; 17 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 18, 7 PM at the Lincoln Park United Methodist Church, 1 Carlisle Ave., Reading, PA 19609 with a military burial to be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Theo C. Auman Funeral Home, Reading is in charge of arrangements.
