Mr. Scott, age 92, had been described by giants such as Isaac Stern, George Szell, Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copeland as the "Wizard" whose musical talent and sonic precision gave us what has been called the Golden Age of Recording, from the late 1940s to the 1960s. Mr. Scott was also instrumental to the invention of the long playing record, or LP.
During the course of his career, Scott produced between 75 and 100 recordings a year for Columbia Records, RCA and MGM. Best known for his classical recordings, particularly his recordings of the "Big Five" symphony orchestras, Scott's repertoire also included jazz, blues, popular music, modern compositions, choral music, opera and some of Broadway's greatest musical productions, including West Side Story, South Pacific and My Fair Lady. In 1966, Scott won a Grammy as Album of the Year Producer for Charles Ives' First Symphony, with Morton Gould Conducting the Chicago Symphony.
After graduating from the University of Rochester in 1941, Mr. Scott attended the Juilliard School of Music until he was drafted to serve in the Army in WWII. Discharged as a Captain after serving four years in England, Scott returned to Juilliard. In July of 1946, Scott was hired by the Masterworks division at Columbia Records.
Scott was predeceased in 1987 by his beloved wife of 41 years, Elsa C. Goodman, of Norfolk, VA. Scott remarried Anne S. Gillespie, of Montclair, NJ, in 1989, and she passed away in 1999. Scott is survived by his sisters, Mrs. Carol Ruth Shepherd in CT, and Mrs. Elaine Silver in FL; his son and daughter-in-law, Jon C. and Alva A. Scott in Wyomissing, PA; his daughter, Andrea K. Scott Esq. and son-in-law, Warren Grundfest, M.D., in Los Angeles, CA. He is also survived by his two granddaughters, Genevieve E. Scott, married to Alexander L. Slobodian, Lily F. Scott, and his seven stepchildren.
