James A. White, 93, affectionately known as "Al" of Philadelphia, passed on Saturday, September 18, 2021, in the Caring Heart Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Born in Charlotte, North Carolina on June 11, 1928, he was a son to the late Arthur White and Sammietta Kennedy Glass.
After graduating from Reading Senior High School - class of 1946, James enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1947; where he was trained as a M-1 Rifle Sharpshooter in the Korean War, until his honorable discharge in 1949. He then went to work as a mail clerk with the United States Postal Service in Philadelphia for thirty five years, until his retirement.
In addition to his parents, James was predeceased by his wife Thelma White, more affectionately known as "Yada", of Pottstown and by his sister Geraldine Johnson.
James is survived by his five children, Michael E. White, of Bethesda, MD; Lynnette White-Bowen, of Glen Burnie, MD; Dorrie Marshall and her husband Joseph, of Reading, PA; Barry C. White, of Reading, PA and Stacy White, of Philadelphia, PA. James also leaves behind seven grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren to cherish his memory.
Once an avid bowler, he switched to golf for the last forty years playing in tournaments nationwide. At home he listened to Frank Sinatra Radio and sometimes played his trumpet along with his brother-in-law, Benjamin Johnson.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the staff of Theo C. Auman, Reading. Funeral service and burial will be private and at the discretion of James's family.
