

Walter (Walt) Schwenger, 87, devoted husband and lifelong community servant, passed away on May 26, 2024. Beloved son of Robert Bee Schwenger and Sibley Merton Schwenger of Washington, DC, Walt leaves behind a legacy of integrity, dedication, and service. Born into a family with strong values and community spirit, Walt was a devoted brother to Robert, Arthur, and John. Walt is survived by his wife of 62 years Jean Anne (nee Sullivan), sons Kenneth (Patricia) and Thomas (Audrey) and joins his deceased son Michael in eternal peace. He leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Lauren, Lindsey Hench (Travis), Michael, and Abby, as well as his new great-granddaughter, Tatum Hench.
Walt’s career covered a diverse array of disciplines. His first job after graduation from Penn State University was putting his Forestry degree to work for the Boy Scouts of America. His subsequent professions included Real Estate, Banking, and Auditing. In addition to his PSU degree, Walt received a BA from Alvernia College in 1988 and an MBA from St. Joseph’s University in 1995. He also served as an active-duty US Marine from 1956 to 1958. Walt dedicated his life to serving others, generously offering his time and talents to over 40 organizations over the course of his life. His impactful contributions included work with the Boy Scouts of America, the Jaycees, the Vision Resource Center of Berks County, Alpha Phi Omega, the Lions Club of Exeter Township, and many others. Walt’s devotion to service was driven by his belief that we should always leave the world better than we found it. His leadership, selflessness and commitment have left an indelible mark on many lives and communities.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Walt’s honor at The Highlands of Wyomissing from 12-4 pm on Saturday, June 1st. The family kindly requests that any donations be made in Walt’s name to Common Cause of Pennsylvania. Walt’s love for his family and dedication to community will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him. His legacy of selfless service will continue to inspire and uplift those whose lives he touched.
