March 8, 1930 - October 14, 2011
Independent and active to the end, Bruce passed away peacefully in his home in Redding, California at the age of 81. A bachelor his entire life, he is survived by his brother Gordon Gardiner of Bellingham, Washington; and several nieces and nephews.
Born in Bakersfield, California, Bruce graduated from East Bakersfield High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 - 1954. He earned the rank of Corporal before his honorable discharge in 1954. Upon his return to civilian life, Bruce earned his B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley. Bruce spent most of his working life in city planning and urban development. He eventually landed in Redding where he was part of the downtown redevelopment in the 1970's and 80's.
Throughout his life he had an appreciation for art, fine wine, peaceful days fishing on the river and was always ready to share an opinion about the political issues of our time. His last several years were spent working in Redding as a handyman and providing janitorial services to several businesses in the area. Bruce valued his customers and the time spent being part of their busy lives.
Per his wishes, Bruce was cremated and will be interned in the Veterans Cemetery in Igo, California, at a private family ceremony.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in his name to the charity of your choice or the local shelters and food banks in the city of Redding.
