Gerald W. Richardson, age 93, passed away quietly in his home Tuesday, November 16, 2021. He was born in Detroit, August 21, 1928, to Bill and Helen Richardson, and preceded in death by his brother Billy.
Beloved husband to the late Juliet; loving father to Nancy Underwood, Kathy Kincaid, Mark (Linda), John (Cathy), Paul, and Ralph (Mary) Richardson. He has 8 granddaughters: Dawn Richardson, Kathy Delorey (Dave), Amy Manosky, Robbi Underwood-Pemberton (Michael), Jamie Bamford (Brett), Sarah Micula (Simon), Alison Richardson, and Kelly Richardson. 11 great grandchildren: Brookelyn Manosky, Julia Manosky, Tayler Manosky, Rachael Delorey, Xavier Underwood-Pemberton, Robert Underwood-Pemberton, Carmelita Underwood-Pemberton, Ethan Bamford, Evan Bamford, Elliot Bamford, and Phoebe Micula. Also 1 great-great granddaughter Delilah. His love, humor, and generosity drew the family to his home for regular “game day” gatherings for many years after the loss of his precious Julie.
“Jerry” has had a distinguished career in music in the Detroit area. As a Cooley High School and Wayne University alum he developed his musical talents in local bands and orchestras. His heart preferred Big Band and Dixieland Jazz Bands but was called upon by the Gail Rice Agency to back up celebrities and fill bands of many genres. He was a member of the Federation of Musicians for over 75 years!
His love for music was multiplied by teaching music, primarily in South Redford Schools, especially as Pierce Junior High Band Director. He said many times how fulfilled his life was by teaching.
He also had other talents such as woodworking and gardening. His garden was twice recognized for awards and garden walks.
He was an avid reader and walked daily right up until September. He had a fierce love for Detroit and a watched with delight as the city started its comeback. He loved Greenfield Village, all the area theaters, Eastern Market, and the riverfront.
Jerry Richardson was a wonderful asset to the lives of many...family, friends, students, and fellow musicians. He will be missed
