Esther was born in Bangor, Pennsylvania. She was the second of five children born to Herald and Emily Mohr. When she was in the 10th grade, she traveled alone by train to attend high school at Canyonville Bible Academy in Roseburg, Oregon. Her older brother, Terry, joined her there the following year. After graduating, she followed Terry to Seattle, Washington, where she met Harold Johnson at Bethel Temple.
Esther and Harold were married on April 20, 1951. Esther and Harold celebrated 68 years of marriage before he passed away in May of 2019. Together they have three daughters.
Esther enjoyed crocheting, crossword puzzles, Skip-Bo, gardening and watching hummingbirds. When living in Port Townsend, Washington, as she played piano by her glass sliding door, a mamma deer and her fawns would come and lay by the door on the patio.
Esther used her musical talent for ministry in churches by playing a variety of musical instruments including the drums, bass fiddle, accordion, guitar, piano, marimba, vibraharp, (which she could play with three mallets in one hand), and the organ. At a very young age, Esther accepted Jesus as her personal Savior and always had a tender heart to serve God in every opportunity He gave her. She taught Youth Bible classes in churches and passed on her music skills to many of the students. Her love for teaching the Bible continued into her 90’s as she taught a Home Bible Study in Port Townsend where she and Harold had retired.
Esther is survived by her daughters, their husbands and families:
Gail and Duane; Devin (wife Rachel), Loren (wife Elizabeth). Myrna and Steve; Rachel (husband John). Charlotte and Gil; Tyler, Megan. Esther’s sisters: Mary Ridgewell & Dolly Welk. Nieces and Nephews and their families.
She was predeceased by her husband Harold Johnson, her brothers: Harold (Terry) Mohr and Dan Mohr, her sister Ruth Metz, and her nephew Dean Mohr.
A small service is being held for those who would like to attend at Tahoma National Cemetery where her husband, Harold, a WWII Veteran is also buried. Tahoma National Cemetery, 18600 SE 240th ST. Kent, WA 98042 on September 14th, 12:30 PM.
