John Beresford ("Barry") Griffiths passed away at age 90 in the early morning of December 17th, 2022 at his assisted living facility in Issaquah, WA. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Beatrice Agnes Griffiths (Stampahar), daughter Christina Wynne Long (Griffiths), two grandchildren (Evan Andrew and Allison Thekla Long), and brother David Lynn Griffiths.
Barry was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada to Edith Thekla Griffiths (Jones) and John Owen Griffiths. His family moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada when he was 17 and he received his Bachelor of Science from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. He went on to study economics at the University of Pittsburgh. It was there, in Pittsburgh, that he met his wife, Beatrice Stampahar. They married on July 7, 1967 and moved to Kirkland, WA in 1968 where they both began working at Boeing. Barry worked there briefly, then worked at the City of Bellevue, then began his real estate investing career… and began waterskiing, snow skiing, and tennis obsessions.
Barry enjoyed life and focused everyday on doing things that made him happy. A 52-year resident of Kirkland (Juanita Bay), WA, he was an avid tennis player/enthusiast, real estate entrepreneur, and travel buff. Tennis was a huge part of his life - annual trips to Cowichan, British Columbia to play on grass tennis courts with The Swallows tennis group, coaching and watching his daughter play tennis through college, watching The Tennis Channel every chance he got, and playing tennis three times per week until age 88 when the world was locked down due to COVID. Barry continued enjoying water skiing, snow skiing, and real estate investing into his mid-70's. He even went skydiving for the first time at age 80. Throughout his life, he traveled the world from Brazil to Europe to the UK to Mexico, and all around the US, British Columbia, and Montreal (his birth place). Later in life, he enjoyed daily walks in downtown Kirkland and Wednesday pizza nights with his tennis buddies.
He will be remembered for being the most stubborn person on the face of the planet, his love of tennis, his laugh, the twinkle in his eye when he said "I love you", his passion for exploring the world, and his enthusiasm for meeting new people. He will be missed dearly.
