Born in Da Wu, HuBei Province in China, he was the son of JianMin Wang and SuMei Wan. He spent his youth during the turbulent years of Japanese invasion and China's civil war. After World War II ended, he followed his father to Shanghai to attend university, eventually graduating from NanJing University in 1952.
He was a highly accomplished professor and researcher in the biology department of NanJing University, and published numerous papers and books in botany and specifically bamboo research. He was the chief scientist, editor, and author of "Flora of China, Volume 9"; a work of decades of collective efforts by researchers across China, sponsored by the Chinese Science Academy. He taught and mentored numerous students in his long career, and many of his students stayed connected and became lifelong friends.
After retirement, he moved to the U. S. to be closer to his daughters. There, he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, and fishing in the many local rivers and lakes. He also continued to correspond with his former colleagues and students in his later years, publishing his last research paper when he was 90 years old.
He is survived by his wife PingYien Wang, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage, his daughters Lingyun Parati, LingXiao Wang, son-in-laws Jonathan Parati, Yu Deng, his grandchildren Giovanni Parati, Asia Parati, Derek Deng, and Roy Deng.
His family is grateful that God’s abundant mercy, grace, and guidance have been with them through this difficult journey, and prepared them for his passing.
The memorial service will be held on June 11th at 10am at Northshore United Church of Christ 18900 168th AVE NE, Woodinville, WA 98072.
