It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and friend to many, Emma Cantu, born in Donna, Texas.
Emma was a devoted wife, loving mother, and proud grandmother whose life was defined by strength, generosity, and unwavering love for her family. To know Emma was to experience warmth—both from her heart and from her kitchen. Her home was a place of comfort, laughter, wisdom, and unforgettable meals. No one ever left her house with an empty stomach. Most often, they left with full plates, extra servings for later, and containers carefully marked “EC”—sometimes even labeled with her address—always returned, just as she requested. She never expected anything in return beyond those empty containers.
Emma was a hardworking woman with a work ethic that is rare to find today. She spent many years working in local packing houses, including Sanger Fruit Growers, Barrs Packing, and dedicating over 60 years to Garry’s Packing. She worked tirelessly, not for recognition, but to provide for and bless her family.
She was someone you could always count on. Whether you were ill, having a difficult day, or simply in need of companionship, Emma was there—ready to listen, offer wisdom, and share time together. Her presence alone brought comfort and reassurance.
Family meant everything to Emma. She loved hosting gatherings, especially her own birthday celebrations, where everyone knew there would be plenty of food, laughter, and togetherness. She took great pride in preparing her special dishes—fresh homemade tortillas, flavorful red hot chilies, her famous beans, homemade burritos, her beloved special menudo, and her traditional tamales that brought family together around the table year after year. Her cookies, crackers, juices, and thoughtful care packages became treasured memories for her children and grandchildren. Each shared a unique and special bond with her, and to this day, they can recall exactly what they would leave her home with—always something prepared with love.
Emma leaves behind her loving children:
David Cantu (Diana), Richard M. Cantu (Martha), Joann Rivera (Ruperto).
She also leaves behind a beautiful legacy of 13 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense pride and joy.
She is survived by her dear siblings:
Raymond Mendoza (Linda), Phyllis Eversole (Robert), Alice Childress (Tom).
She was preceded in death by her cherished parents, Elosia and Luis Mendoza, her beloved husband, David Cantu Sr.; her daughter, Diane Cantu; her brothers, Lupe, Tomas, and Alfred Mendoza; her sisters, Lydia Cantu and Maria Feuerstein.
Emma’s legacy is one of generosity, strength, hospitality, and unconditional love. The traditions she created, the meals she prepared, and the memories she built will continue to live on in each of us. Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in God’s promise:
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
— Psalm 34:18 (NIV)
She will be deeply missed and remembered always.
