Nov 4, 1933 – May 3, 2024
It is with great sadness that the family of Ethel announce her passing on Friday, May 3, 2024 after a short but courageous battle with cancer.
Ethel was predeceased by her husband Henry (1990); her children Doug (1988), Rhonda Graham (2019), Ken (2020); and her partner Paul Lakeman (2016). She will be dearly missed by her son Fred; daughters Karen Kuntz (Martin), Shannon, and Shelly Toniello (Dino); son-in-law John Graham; and daughter-in-law Tanya. Continuing her legacy are 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
Ethel was born in Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan on her family’s homestead just south of the rail tracks, the sixth child of Frederick and Grace (Hatherly) Whiting. She was predeceased by her brothers Maurice, Bill, Gordon, Percy, and most recently Jack; and two sisters, Elsie and Joan. She leaves behind her beloved sister Pat, who remained Mom’s constant companion; sisters-in-law Dorothy Whiting, Marg Whiting, and Cecilia Leibel; Paul’s family; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ethel married Henry in 1951, and together they raised their 7 children on the farm south of Qu’Appelle before moving into town in 1973. Once the kids were older and some had left home, she began a career as postmaster, as well as administrator for Regina Housing Authority and Census taker for Statistics Canada. Whether on the farm or in town, Ethel always had her door open, ready to greet you with coffee, cake and conversation. After Henry passed away, she moved to Regina where she continued to enjoy an active social life. After meeting Paul, they spent many years together traveling with family and friends, Arizona being one of their favourite destinations.
Ethel epitomized strength and independence, yet her compassion and sensitivity touched the lives of all that knew her. Her radiant smile and gentle nature will be dearly missed by all.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 13, 2024 at 11:00 AM at the Victoria Avenue Funeral Home. The service will be livestreamed. Private interment to follow at Qu’Appelle Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
