Fred was a World War II veteran. From 1942-1946 he served in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps in Great Britain, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. While in the service, he took a grade nine mathematics and mechanics course and diesel engine course by correspondence and was classified as a driver mechanic. He transported troops and hauled fuel, ammunition, food and supplies wherever needed. While in Italy, Fred’s nose and face were injured in a truck accident and he spent time in a Military Hospital in Naples. The last year he served with the occupation force driving ambulance in Germany. Fred suffered arthritic pain from the war for the rest of his life. Fred and his wife, Mary took up farming when his parents retired to Regina in 1963. He enjoyed farming and the many reunions with family and in-laws at the “Ponderosa.” Fred and Mary retired to Regina in 1991 and enjoyed their retirement years together until her passing in 2000. He liked to spend time doing woodwork projects and then began writing and typing memoirs of his younger years. Fred continued to type out pioneer stories and became skilled at printing and putting scrap books together. Most of all he enjoyed having his family around. At the age of 90, due to his hearing loss, Fred, embraced technology and began communicating with his family through texting on his smartphone. Fred will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Many thanks to the nursing staff at the Pasqua Hospital units 3D and 4D and the staff of Grace Hospice for their care. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Grace Hospice.
