Born January 27, 1931 in Leroy, Saskatchewan to Rudolf and Ida Schmidt. She was predeceased by her parents; brother Bill; sister Margaret Klein on January 16, 2021; and brother-in-law Jack Klein.
She left this world peacefully in Regina, Saskatchewan on Monday, January 15, 2024 to rejoin her husband of 62 years, Irvin Hepting, who passed away January 12, 2019.
She is survived by her son Daryl (Jennifer); her precious grandchildren Madelaine and Finn; sister-in-law Vera Hepting; brother-in-law Hal (Betty) Hepting; nieces Bev (Jerry) Weyland and Sherry Klein and many nieces and nephews on the Hepting side.
She graduated from Luther College High School in Regina in 1949. She credited Dr. Rex Schneider at Luther for encouraging her to become an X-Ray Technician, something she did until her son, Daryl, was born. Her many friends from that period of her life knew her as “Smitty”.
Irvin and Gertie enjoyed travelling and made many new lifelong friends this way. Destinations included Europe, Australia, and Alaska.
She was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mom, grandma, aunt, and friend. She was a great cook and a great hostess for a multitude of gatherings for family and friends. It is fitting that we celebrate her life today, January 27, 2024 which would have been her 93rd birthday.
She and her smile will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.
A special thanks to the staff at Allegro Seniors Home whose care and support made her last months comfortable.
A Memorial Service will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 3825 Hillsdale Street, Regina, SK, on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at 11a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Lutheran World Relief, 400-185 Carlton Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 3J1, or to a charity of your choice.
