

Born in Regina, Saskatchewan on September 9, 1957, Leon lived a life marked by creativity, compassion, and a deep empathy for others. He had a remarkable ability to listen without judgment, and brought joy and understanding to everyone he met. Known by many as “Lee Thong the Leather Man,” he not only created beautiful pieces of art, jewelry, and carvings, but he shared pieces of himself through each item he created. Leon was a natural storyteller who always had a tale to share, captivating those around him with his wit, warmth, and wisdom.
Leon was predeceased by his parents, Floyd and May Smythe (née Sawa), and his brother Orville Smythe. He leaves behind his loving wife, Kim Smythe; his sister Eleanor Smythe (Dave Ottenbreit); his brother Rick Smythe (Susan); his cherished daughter Cassandra Smythe (Jared Poitras-Whitehawk); his beloved grandchildren Violet and Thaddeus; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will miss him deeply.
A funeral service to honor Leon’s life will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2025, from 2:00 PM at Lee Funeral Home and Crematorium, located at 3101 Dewdney Avenue, Regina.
Leon’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched. His kindness, creativity, and unwavering empathy will be remembered always.
