Bernard 冠明 Wong was born on April 29, 1958 in Hong Kong to 黃倫 and 馬佩蓮. Mr. Wong’s family hails from 牛角龍, Toishan, Guangdong, China. His family migrated to Hong Kong to escape communist China during the Cultural Revolution. Growing up in Hong Kong, he chose a path that ultimately supported him and his family. He left school at the early age of 14 to work and study the art of Dim Sum, where he later mastered this challenging culinary endeavor and became an official Dim Sum chef.
Mr. Wong met his wife, Jenny, in 1986 and journeyed to America to seek opportunity and a better life for his growing family. Settling in Seattle, WA in 1989, Mr. Wong worked diligently in the Dim Sum and food industry for over 30 years, making many friendships and feeding the hungry people of Seattle through his artistry at Sun Ya, Ocean City, Four Seas, O’Asian Kitchen + Lounge, and Safeway. He was an incredibly hard worker and motivated by his role as a provider, working long hours and sustaining kitchen injuries to ensure the bills were paid and the lights stayed on so his children and wife had a safe and comfortable home to return to.
Mr. Wong had many different interests over his lifetime, reading comic books, the Seattle Sonics basketball team, kung fu movies, going out to “yum cha” with his friends, visiting his home city of Hong Kong, sharing a meal with his family, and spending quality time with his grandchildren. Mr. Wong passed away peacefully at Harborview Medical Center on February 28, 2025 in Seattle, WA at the age of 66. He is survived by his wife, Jenny 妙珍 Ma; children, Michelle Wong (Dan Pitts) and Eugene Wong (Sarah Teng), and grandchildren Lily and Parker.
He will be deeply missed by friends, colleagues, and his family.
