

Din David Shing, 89, died on April 28, 2010 after suffering from congestive heart failure and a subsequent stroke. He was under the care of Leon Sullivan Health Care Center in Seattle at the time of his death. David was born in Taishan, China, near Hong Kong, on November 12, 1920. In 1936, he moved to the United States, and spent his adolescent years in Walla Walla, WA. After graduation from high school in 1943, he enlisted in the US Navy to join the battle in the Pacific in World War II. He served on the destroyer escort USS Oliver Mitchell. After the war, he enrolled at the University of Washington and earned a degree in Engineering. During this time, he returned to China and married May. After their first year of marriage, he returned to Seattle to complete his education, while May remained in Hong Kong to bear their firstborn son, Joseph. She joined David in the US in 1951. Soon after, Jean and Albert were added to the family. After graduating from the UW in 1951, David was hired by the Boeing Company. Unfortunately, he was the victim of several of Boeing’s downturns, and he took jobs in Fort Worth, TX, Albany, NY, and Los Angeles, CA in between stints at Boeing. When he retired from Boeing in 1990, he had accumulated 35 years of service in the Boeing Company. In his retirement years, David and May took 16 cruises to various places around the world, and took up ballroom dancing as a hobby. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, May, their children, Joseph Shing (Madeline), Jean Machiz (Marc), and Albert Shing; four grandsons, Jonathan Shing (Melisa), Joshua Machiz , Douglas Machiz, and Kevin Machiz, one great granddaughter, Zoe Shing (Jonathan and Melisa); his sister Hang Wan Lee, who lives in New York City and many nieces and nephews. The body may be viewed at Greenwood Memorial Park, 350 Monroe Ave NE, Renton, WA 98056, from 12PM-7PM on Friday, May 7, 2010. A funeral service will be held at St. Edwards Catholic Church, 4205 S Orcas Street, Seattle, WA 98118, at 11AM on Saturday, May 8, 2010. The casket will be open at the church from 10AM-11AM. Following the funeral service, an escorted procession to Lakeview Cemetery, 1554 15th Avenue East, Seattle, WA 98112, for the committal service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Kin On Health Care Center in Seattle, WA.
