

Joyce was born March 1, 1927, the eldest daughter of Joseph Ray and Darlene Van Brookhaven. She is the last surviving member of her family.
Joyce completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Washington in 1974 where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa. She was a lifelong member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society.
In 1962 Joyce joined the Visitation Monastery in Federal Way having attended retreats there for many years but after prayerful discernment she decided to leave at the end of her temporary vows 5 years later.
Joyce worked for a telephone company where she met her partner, Wendy. After early retirement in 2000, Joyce and Wendy moved to Renton, Washington.
Joyce was a member of the Women's Golf League at Cascade Golf Course where she received a plaque for a hole in one, an achievement she was very proud of.
Joyce was a patron of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and attended numerous performances with Wendy. She and Wendy made annual trips to Mazatlan where they enjoyed the sun with family and friends.
