Judy spent her first 10 years growing up on the family farm in Henning, MN before moving to Renton with her family in October 1953. After spending her first four years in the Henning school system, Judy attended Sartori Elementary, McKnight Junior High, and graduated from Renton High School in 1961. During her junior year at Renton, Judy was introduced to one of her brother’s friends, Lee Baker, during a ride home from the movies. They quickly became high school sweethearts, were married in 1964, and settled in the Renton area. Lee & Judy would go on to enjoy over 57 years of marriage.
Judy began her working career in 1961 as a dental assistant for Dr. Dearl Rawson in the Renton Highlands. After taking time off to raise three boys (4 if you count Lee!), she returned to work in the front office for local dentists Drs. George Hodgson, Robert Hall, and Steve Yang.
Judy loved the outdoors, and when her kids were younger the family would go on several camping trips each summer. These trips were only possible due to the organization and patience that were Judy trademarks. As Lee became interested in sailing, Judy went from a reluctant passenger to an enthusiastic first mate. Through over 40 years of boat ownership, their sailing adventures took them all over Puget Sound, the San Juan Islands, and British Columbia including their favorite destination, Desolation Sound. She also treasured their sailing trips in the British Virgin Islands with longtime sailing friends.
When Judy was not sailing, she enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, and cooking. She was the person that brought all the family together, whether through family gatherings, birthdays, or other special occasions. Judy was simply the nicest, kindest person and will be missed by all who loved her.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents and brother Michael. Her husband Lee passed away in May. Judy is survived by sons Chris Baker and wife Nichole, Scott Baker and partner Darcey Peterson, Paul Baker and wife Pam, brother William (Bill) Young, sister-in-law Deborah Ellen Baker, and 6 grandchildren.
A celebration of life for both Judy and Lee will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 23rd at the Hyatt Regency Lake Washington in Renton.
Contributions in Judy’s memory may be made to the Renton Historical Society or a local food bank of your choice.
