She passed away peacefully at her home into the arms of Jesus on April 2, 2023.
Born in Auburn, WA to Seiroku and Takaye on May 6, 1937, as a preemie weighing less than four pounds, she was a miracle from the beginning. As a child, she and her family spent three years detained in internment camps in Tule Lake, CA, and Minidoka, ID during World War II. Although this had a profound negative effect on her life, resulting in much hardship, barriers, and obstacles for her and her family, she did not harbor bitterness and showed great empathy and love towards others.
After high school and trade school, May worked at the University of Washington Dental School where she met one of their promising students, Kai Hong. They were married in 1961 in Seattle where they raised four children. She was engaged and present in the lives of each of her kids, their friends, and her extended family, always available to listen, encourage, laugh, and love. May was also deeply invested in the lives of her grandchildren, who gave her great joy. She loved her church family at Seattle Chinese Baptist Church and had a passion for Scripture, attending Bible Study Fellowship for the past several years.
May had an active and sharp mind. She was an avid bridge player, enjoyed solving crossroad puzzles, playing word games, challenging others on Words with Friends, and was always up for a game of Mexican Train with her friends, family, and especially her grandkids.
May was an engaged spectator in all kinds of sports and competitions. She enjoyed watching golf, football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, the Olympics, and game shows. May also was a Mariners fan. She had a great time going to games and celebrating special occasions in a suite at the ballpark. May also loved a party and frequently gathered family and friends at her home and restaurants where there would be great food, fun, sharing, and special party favors. For over 20 years, she hosted 50+ golfers, families, and friends at the annual backyard picnic for the Golf-Eng Tournament.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years Kai Hong, sons Doug (Jenny) and Randy (Karen), daughters Leigh-Ann (Tim) and Julianne (Dave), grandchildren Katherine, Garrett, Cameron, and Nathan, granddogs Mojo and Griffey, sister Sumi, and many nieces and nephews.
