Born Robert James Carroll on March 27, 1943, in Omak, Washington, to Robert Carl and Alice Janet Carroll, Jim spent his early years in Raymond, where his father served as high school superintendent. After graduating from Raymond High School, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy before continuing his education at Washington State University.
It was after graduation that Jim met the love of his life, Nancy, with whom he shared more than 40 years of marriage. Together they made their home in Centralia, raising two children and building a life filled with family, friends, and adventure. Jim was happiest outdoors—backpacking with close friends, camping with the Green Hill group, or traveling with his family in their Airstream trailer.
Following Nancy’s passing, Jim moved to Renton to be closer to family while continuing his retirement. Though he relocated, he remained deeply connected to Centralia, making monthly trips back for haircuts with his longtime barber. A loyal fan, he rarely missed a Cougar football game or a chance to cheer on the Mariners.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Megan (Jeff) Baker, and his son, Zach (Pam) Carroll; grandchildren Ryann Baker, Kendall Baker, Jensen Carroll, Jayden Carroll, Mandy Benner, Cherokee Roberts, and Hailey Todd; and several great-grandchildren.
A service to celebrate Jim’s life will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at Newell-Hoerling’s Mortuary.
