Robert Curtis Harkins was born on February 27, 1959 in Renton, WA to Charles and Marian (Melby) Harkins. The Harkins Family was a large, loving family that enjoyed many outdoor activities including camping, fishing, and hunting. Bob enjoyed family fishing trips the most which led his mom to comment that “Bob saw a fish in every puddle”. The family cabinet business also kept them busy and Bob was able to learn the art of cabinetry from his dad.
In high school Bob enjoyed art classes and considered a career in graphic art but the pull of the family business was strong which proved to be a blessing as it gave Bob a foundation to use in his career path. That path included 5 years with the Boeing Company and then after 2 years of vocational training he earned a maintenance specialist title. His last position was director of maintenance at Stafford Suites where he put his talents as a “fix it” man to work and enjoyed the staff and residents greatly.
In 1979 Bob met Kimberly Becker. She was delighted by his sense of humor, good heart, and love of the outdoors. In 1981, with their shared faith, love of family, and common goals, Bob and Kim decided to marry. Their daughter, Brittany was born in 1989 with son Curtis following in 1993. Bob loved his children and was the best at helping them with various projects making them wonder who should get the credit for them! The family enjoyed camping, trips to the ocean, a backyard, pool, outside projects, family get-togethers, and generally being together.
In Bob’s spare time he loved puttering in his shop and working on his solar and wind power projects, fixing most anything, and cooking some mean barbeque. He was a member of King of Kings Lutheran Church.
Tragedy came to Bob in 2006 with the first diagnosis of lymphoma, but with his usual sense of humor and tenacity he went on to beat that and later, in 2007, a brain tumor. He lost his brave battle with cancer on March 13, 2013 and went home to be with the Lord.
Bob is survived by his wife, Kimberly (Becker) Harkins, daughter, Brittany Harkins, son Curtis Harkins, Mother, Marian Harkins, sisters, Sandra Sinclair (Steve), Linda Johnson (Charles), Lois Stanley (Bob), Kathleen Sands, Kristine Wanzer (Larry), Anita Dorrough (Anthony), brother Leroy Harkins (Ramona), and many, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Harkins and brother, Charles (Butch) Harkins.
Bob will be remembered by his great sense of humor, attention to detail in all he did, and his steadfast love of his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at King of King Lutheran Church, 18207 108th Ave. SE, Renton, WA 98055, starting at 6:00PM with a slideshow and services starting at 6:30PM. reception following. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
