We are sad to announce that Greg Immel passed away at home on Sunday, February 4, 2024, in Richardson, TX. He was 76 years old and suffered from glioblastoma (brain cancer) for the last 2 1/2 years. He is survived by his wife, Sue, and they had been married for over 52 years. They had two children Erin Luke (Jake) and Stephen Immel (Randee) and between the two gave them 4 grandchildren - Clay Luke (14), Dylan Luke (12), Caleb Immel (10), and Madisynn Immel (8). He was survived by three brothers (Jerry, Kevin, and Phil) and was preceded in death by his parents Jerry and Kathleen Immel, sister (Laur Cornish), and brother (Ricky).
Greg was born May 1, 1947, in Boulder, Colorado, but grew up mostly in Chicago and later moved to Edina, Minnesota. He attended St. Benedict School in Chicago through 8th grade, attended 2 years at St. George's High School in Evanston, Illinois, and graduated from Edina High School (Minnesota) in 1965. While still living in Chicago, he delivered newspapers before serving at daily morning mass, worked at Wrigley Field, and sold hot dogs along the shores of Lake Michigan. He went on to college at Mankato State and St. John's University in Minnesota and graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas with a Bachelors of Science in Economics after relocating to Dallas with Gabberts Furniture.
Greg's education led him to a career as a credit manager where he counseled many companies on how to manage their business. He worked several places, but his longest tenures were at Lennox and Hanson Pipe. He was community and civic-oriented and held several positions in the local J.J. Pearce Homeowners Association. His involvement had him attending city council meetings, which led him to be on the committee for the Richardson Real Heroes and participate in Richardson CARES.
Greg loved gardening and even obtained his Master Gardeners certification. He took pride in keeping his yard looking beautiful and won the Yard of the Month several times. He loved all types of music and sang with the Vocal Majority barbershop chorus for several years. Being a former athlete (football, track and field, and wrestling), he really enjoyed his children's and grandchildren's numerous sporting events. He was a great sideline coach! He also loved spending time fishing, and many recent family vacations were centered around his love for the lake. He and Stephen even took a canoe trip through the Boundary Waters in Northern Minnesota a few years ago.
Coincidentally, death has knocked on Greg's door before. On November 11, 1967, he had a deer hunting accident in Northern Minnesota, and by the time his friends got him to the nearby hospital, he was pronounced dead. Greg experienced life after death, and even though he said it was a wonderful place, he chose to come back and tell his story numerous times. It is definitely a comfort to anyone that has lost a loved one, and is now a comfort to his family. He will be missed dearly.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Head for the Cure Foundation in memory of Greg to help further brain cancer research.
