

Thomas Shelton Bywaters died peacefully in his sleep Saturday morning January 23rd, 2016, after a long battle with heart disease. Born June 2, 1937, Tom’s parents were Margaret A. Bywaters and Porter A. Bywaters, Jr. Raised in Dallas, he graduated from Highland Park High School, Yale University, and received a master’s degree from Rice University. After graduation, Tom spent the majority of his career in New York City and San Francisco where he became an accomplished television producer and director. During this time, Tom was awarded 3 Emmys and 3 Peabody awards. In recognition of his artistic ability and achievement, Tom was a past board member of the USA Film Festival. After his return to Dallas, Tom was an associate professor at both UTD and SMU and is credited with guiding many students in their careers. Tom had a passion for his cats, Max and Rainy, the SPCA, lifelong friends and family. He was a proud longstanding member of Lambda AA. Tom’s quick wit, sharp tongue, and dry sense of humor will be missed by all who knew and loved him. We wish to extend our sincere appreciation for all who have cared for Tom the last six months. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that anyone wishing to honor Tom to make a memorial donation to the SPCA or charity of your choice. Graveside Services will be Saturday, January 30, at 11:00 A.M, Myrtle Cemetery in Ennis, TX.
