A real trooper has left this earth. Robert Travis Bennett, beloved son of Julie Bennett, died peacefully at home on Thursday June 13, 2013.
Travis was born on Oct. 29, 1989 with Apert's syndrome, a rare genetic birth defect characterized by premature fusion of the bones of the head, hands and feet. He attended HPHS through 2007 before transferring to Berkner High School in the RISD for its Special Education Transition Program. He was baptized at Wilshire Baptist Church in March of 2004.
Travis loved his cats, music, riding his bike and DART trains, movies, and video and computer games. He had a gift for electronics and was mechanically minded. He enjoyed helping friends restore ’57 Chevies. Among his many achievements were helping to rescue Sunday school kindergartners from a flood at his church, earning a silver medal in the Special Olympics for bowling, participating in Challenge Air for Kids and Friends, eventually demonstrating how to fly at Challenge's flight school as an Ace Pilot, and was honored as Student of the Year at Bradfield in the fourth grade. He recently received an outstanding job performance review earning him a raise and promotion at Lakewood Country Club. He also volunteered three days a week at the Richardson Public Library giving back to the community at the place he loved the most.
Travis was an extraordinary person who met every challenge in his life with faith, optimism and a sense of humor. He was an outgoing person who made friends easily with his adventurous spirit, generosity and kindness. As a co-worker stated, “Travis, you exemplified what it meant to be a person with high spirits day in and day out. It was an absolute honor to have met you.” He held no grudges and let go of disappointments easily. All of his life, every day, was an adventure for him that he welcomed with open arms and thumbs up.
Travis is survived by his mother, family - including his three beloved cats - and a multitude of friends. He brought joy to everyone in his life and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
