It's hard to believe it's been a year since Susie left this earth. What I wanted to focus on was the 69 years she gave love and joy to her family and friends through her kind words and actions and of course her laughter. The world was a brighter place and we can all try and be the kind of person to others like our beloved Susie was to us.

Tribute to Susan lovingly from Kevin

She was my wife for 25 years
•As a couple we were often asked: How did we meet?
oWe met in an evening class in Economics at JFK University in Orinda over in the East Bay.  Economics was her very last class she needed to finish her undergraduate work and I was taking the class to get some extra course credits.
oI was initially attracted to her because she was pretty and elegantly dressed which is combination you normally don't see in a classroom
oShe was attracted to me because I was wearing a T-shirt with a sailboat on it and was wondering if I shared her affinity with the ocean
oI looked for excuses to sit near her in class and invited her out one night
oShe agreed to the invitation but made it clear that she wasn't interested in a relationship
oSo rather than starting a relationship we started studying Economics together throughout that semester
oAnd I take full credit for her acing the course (jokingly)
oShe has told people that if it weren't for this class, we would have never met each other
oLess than 3 years later we were married. In May of this year we paid tribute to our silver wedding anniversary
•I was drawn to Susan because:
oI was at a time in my life where I was looking for a relationship
oAnd there was something extra special about her:
She was smart
Pretty 
Witty
Funny
Easy to be with and talk to
She told interesting stories about her life and kept me entertained
Susan was majoring in psychology and she told me that all the guys she met in her Psch classes were flakes and it was nice to be with me because I was grounded and made her feel secure
Overall, I just liked her energy which was upbeat, honest, sincere, and genuine

•Susan made my life better
oShe brought joy into my life. She loved to laugh and would always try hard to make me laugh. I called her humor goofy because.it was goofy, yet always happy
oSusan brought beauty into our home with her roses and flowers. She had the proverbial green thumb and we had a plethora of plants and flowers everywhere we lived and she loved to tend to her plants in the garden almost every day.
oShe took good care of me. I would come home from work and the house would be immaculate, she took pride in looking good and dressing well, and always made dinner time a special time to be together, something her kids would attest to because she wanted her family to spend quality time together in the evening.
oShe was a voracious reader and was intellectually challenging. She would come up with words or topics I had never even heard of before. I have to admit that I utilized Google frequently just so I could keep up with her curious mind.
o But sometimes Life threw challenges at her that she had to face and overcome
She had an unhappy childhood home life
She produced two beautiful children with her first husband but their marriage did not survive
Her second marriage was with a man who was an avid rock climber and she abruptly lost him after he fell off the face of El Capitan in Yosemite on a weekend climb
Her younger sister whom she loved very much died at a relatively early age
I believe that all of these challenging events and losses shaped her personality and ultimately made her a stronger person. Many of her friends felt they could confide in her in their most troubled moments. Many of the cards and letters I have received recently talk about how Susan helped them through tough issues when they had no one else to turn too. She is beloved by so many people.
•Susan was a positive influence on my life
oShe brought out the softer side of my personality
She was very sensitive and disapproved if I became over ambitious. She taught me to be more kind to her and others.
oShe persuaded me to take time to enjoy life outside of work and encouraged me to take life more slowly so we could appreciate the beauty of nature, plants, and animals together
oShe believed in looking at life's problems in the face and dealing with them head on rather than sweeping them under the carpet
oI observed how much time and dedication she had for her friends. Each friend she cared for deeply and made every effort to stay in contact with them and stay current in their lives. She spent endless hours communicating with them through emails, Face book, and telephone calls. She is a role model for me to go forward and appreciate all those that care about me and make sure I don't take anyone or anything for granted.
•Some of you have asked about Susan's illness
oLife for us was rolling along just fine until the day after my birthday in April this year. Her skin tone turned yellow which prompted a series of medical tests. Soon, we received a phone call from a doctor who told us that she had stage 4 pancreatic cancer. We were both in disbelief. We thought he must have her confused with another patient. It is still hard for me to comprehend. Our world turned upside-down.
oWe researched pancreatic cancer on the internet but everything we read was scary and unoptimistic. It is a cancer that is rarely beaten and life often goes quick and harsh once diagnosed. 
•Although Susan was sometimes frightened about what might happen to her, she never wavered and knew how she wanted to manage the situation from the start. She remained strong and upbeat to the very end. She stayed in touch with her friends as though she would go on forever. She was so fortunate that her mariner girl-scout friends took her to Mendocino for one last reunion as Susie O has described. I was so happy for her that she could attend. 
•My parting message to all of you:
oYou don't always know what you've got til it's gone, so cherish what you have while it's here. Go home and treasure your loved ones because none of us really know how much time we will have to spend with them.
oWhen you think of Susan think of friendship. She will remain our friend forever and that's the way she would want to be remembered.
•I am honored to have spent the last 28 years of my life with Kirk and Kirsten's mother
•She was my wife, my best friend, my confidant, and my love. I miss her very much now and will forever.

Hi, I am Susie Obazawa Berteaux. Susan Smith Christensen was my oldest and dearest friend. We've been friends since early childhood.  
One of my earliest memories was when I was around 4 years old, my mother said let's take some sandwiches and lemonade to the workers that are building that new house. I carried the plate of tuna sandwiches and my mom carried the pitcher of lemonade and glasses across the street to the house that was being finished by two good looking men that had tool belts on, so they seemed very official to me.
I thought one of the men was particularly nice because he talked to me.  He asked me my name and how old I was, then he said My little girl is the same age and her name is Susie, too  perhaps you will be friends Little did anyone realize that that was an understatement of gigantic proportions.
Susie and I have been bff's - best female friends and best friends forever.
We played together in each other's backyards as preschoolers.  We walked to kindergarten together even tho we were in different classes.  More often than not, we were in the same class during elementary school.  We took the school bus to Jr High, the city bus to High School from the same corner of our block. 
Taking the city bus to school, we had to go by the Roess's Market sidewalk airvent to get to the bus.  One day on the way to the bus, we ran into my grandfather right by the airvent  Susie was trying to avoid walking over the airvent  she didn't want to Marilyn Monore  but my grandfather hooked his arms around our necks and walked us over the airvent  I can still hear Susie screeching and giggling in that laugh of hers enjoying the teasing of my grandfather and his love. Everyone in the neighborhood loved her  the babies to the grandparents.
During our college years, Susie got married and when her husband Scott finished school and got a job, they moved to San Diego where I was living and teaching school.  When I got married and had my child, Susie and I made sure our children were friends by doing lots of family things together.  Our children still keep in touch via Facebook  what a gift. 
We were Brownies, Girl Scouts and then Mariner Scouts together. This group of girls grew up together  we had birthday parties, camp outs, hikes, picnics; as we got older, we still did these things but added boy/girl parties.  When we were in our late forties, I overheard one of our high school boyfriends telling my mom  When I became friends with Susie Smith in high school and she introduced me to this Treasure Trove of Women (referring to the Mariner Scouts.) 
At the 30th HS reunion, Susie couldn't attend the reunion and upon reflection, she realized the only people she really wanted to see were the Mariner Scouts. So, for the next 6 months she contacted the Scout Leader Mama Pete, found as many current addresses as she could and organized the first SeaNymph reunion in the summer of 1994 at Mama Pete's nursery school. We all had such a grand time, we made plans to get together the next summer.  That was 20 years ago and this group of women have been getting together once a year meeting in Mendocino, Southern California, Oregon, Maine, So. Carolina, Hawaii, Canada and Mexico. We have been able to rekindle very special relationships in a close, mature and supportive way based on our fellowship as teenagers.  We share have heartaches and joys in ways we would have missed if it hadn't been for our Susie wanting to gather us together 20 years ago.
After her diagnosis, she only had the energy to share her illness to people she knew she could count on  her family and the Mariners. We Mariners rallied and made sure she spent at least a couple of days with us in Mendocino this last June. I know I speak for each one of the Ancient Mariners by saying what a joyful time we had with her enjoying the botanical gardens, the beautiful shoreline of Mendocino and listening to her joyful and endearing laugh. Christine wants Kevin and the family to know how blessed we were to spend time with her in June and how her courage, grace and dignity were unfailing.

There are so many things my mom always did that made me feel special and important. I am also blessed with some of her unique genetic traits.  They seemed simple at the time, but I now know they have become the most profound and organic tools I have for loving life, coping, and healing.  She always made me a separate special batch of baked goods and treats  with out nuts or coconut flakes! I thrive on being the cook and nurturing my loved ones with sit-down meals and fresh baked cookies  this makes my heart warm and has given me the tool of nurturing especially as a parent and spouse.  She passed on her gene of her love of the ocean which is my sanctuary and sacred place. That is why I like to surf so much, because instead of getting beat up or tossed around, I ride waves and am stoked  kind of like life. Every time I enter the ocean I feel a rebirth and any negativity rinses away.
She taught me the gift of creating art so I can do something with my energy through my hands. I have always loved to build, create and tinker.  I am grateful for this last timely project my mom assigned me as it has become a great tool for processing my grief and healing.  It has given me something tangible to connect to her heart and soul.
Her last project for me was the most profound. At our last Thanksgiving visit she hand me this little thing in the palm of her hand. Look what I found Kirky  it plays our song can you fix it so it is a music box again so we can here it better!  She then handed me this little rusty pins of what was once a music box.  When I turned the crank it played here comes the sun. I wonder if she knew how huge of a gift this tiny little heart of a music box would be to me. Building the music box around its core or heart center gave me something to do with my hands and have something tangible to hear the heart of the box sing. Metaphorically giving me a vehicle to hear my mom's heart and her soul sing to me.
Both my mom and I treasure certain earthly mementos loved ones have left behind and found gifts from the earth and ocean.  We could not go on a walk or hike anywhere without coming home with our pockets full of treasures and always have them close by for comfort. Before this process arose these items were in drawers, boxes and night stands.  The process of creating this now sacred  music box, building something with my hands and having all these things in one place where I can hear my moms heart sing has been unbelievable healing.  Thanks mom for your tools and gifts that will last a lifetime  now I know what to do with my congested energy - I can now move through my healing process.
I am so honored and grateful to be able to be a part of and share at this sacred ceremony that celebrates the life of my mom. 
I feel so fortunate to have been with my mom when she labored and transitioned from earth to a pain free existence.  I was then left with that returning numb sickening feeling and thought of I don't know what to do.  I recognize the feeling from when my step dad Don fell from earth as a child, when the last of my grandparents died years ago, and when Anne's parents and our dog Daisy Mae all passed away last year.  Like a wound so deep it does not even bleed or hurt yet, I cannot even cry and don't know what to do.  When the numbness ends, I am left with an intangible pain that there is no medicine for an everybody is different recipe for healing.  I know memorials, family, good memories and time are great healers  things I am blessed to have an abundance of.  Thank you for all your gifts and tools mom  I know what to do.
As time passes, I feel my loved ones in my heart and have more smiles than pain.  I am looking forward to that time with you.

Hi my name is Kirsten and I am Susan's daughter. Thank you for coming today and sharing in the celebration of my mom's life. 

I would first like to go back in time to My first childhood memory of my mom  I was two years old, in 1971. I clearly recall moms long shiny brunette hair, she and and dad looking down into my crib smiling, singing you are my sunshine and everybody loves my baba keystone. 

Looking back on so many wonderful childhood days with mom. Spending hours with mom and Kirk making homemade crafts , homemade play dough and Sequined Christmas ornaments. She created the coolest birthday themes with cakes she spent hours creating and perfecting. I admit I was a bit jealous of kirks multi layered circus ice cream cake. 

Mom would read endless stories and I would daydream. Now I daydream about her everyday.

I would like to read a poem The Flowers From A child's garden of versus by Robert louis Stevenson - one of my favorite books my mom used to read to us

The Flowers
All the names I know from nurse

My mother spent hours tending to her garden. She would feed the flowers, trim the bushes, mow the lawn and pull weeds. The garden was always in perfect order. This  time was her peaceful time . Metaphorically she kept her life garden weeded and healthy and beautiful as well. I took her garden tools for life and have integrated them into my life too. I am forever grateful for this as I juggle my full but beautiful life . My garden is rich and growing because of moms seeds.

I have to say mom was almost always right and would have the last word to say. Mom would stay on the phone an extra 5 minutes to be the last one to say goodbye. ..before she passed mom was the last one to poke me on Facebook . 

When I was a teenager there were the times I didn't want to listen 
Mom would listen to me and give great advice. 
I would not take her words of wisdom and 
the outcome was just as she had speculated .
She wouldn't say anything, she would just look me in the eye
And smile her cute smile

We had so many parallels in life. We met our first husbands young. We both had two children in our first marriage, became widows in our mid thirties and remarried ( I know it is not nice to reveal a woman's age)..we remarried when we were both a bit more mature in life. She helped me to understand what I was going through and think forward to the future.  

Mom was always thoughtful, encouraging and always protected us. The times we shared as a family are clear in my mind. She taught me to be the person that I am.
I now carry on these characteristics and traits from my mother with my four children. 

I am thankful for all of the wonderful loving memories that can be cherished and passed on to our families for years to come. Mom will live in each of us and we will be blessed by her presence through us.

Even though we graduated from PHS, we didn't really know each other until Facebook.  It was so great viewing your posts and I knew you were a special person. Miss being able to see your posts.  You were also married right before my husband and I were.  He went to be the Lord in August 2008.  I appreciate that you were a beautiful person that had an impact on many.

Susie, like so many of our PS/FB Sisters have mentioned, we had never met. But your specialness came through in every photo you shared, story you told or comment you made. You used to always comment on my food photos that you had your "food fix" for the day. I will bake a cake in honor of you and remember you with much love and fondness. God has another angel.  Your PS Sisters will miss you.  My sincerest condolences to the family.
