

She was the beloved wife of the late John Russell Britten and loving mother of two daughters, Beverly Britten Moore of Baltimore, Maryland and Brenda Britten Mathews (David Hodnett) of Richmond, Virginia. She was also the devoted Mimi to four grandchildren, Elizabeth Lindsay Britten McGettigan (Brian James) of Green Spring Valley, Maryland, Virginia Anne Meriwether Lantz (David Edward) of Atlanta, Georgia, David Hodnett Mathews, Jr. (Lindsay Sams) of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Kendall Britten Mathews of Charlotte, North Carolina and to six great-grandchildren, Carter and Britten McGettigan, Meriwether and Walker Lantz, and David III and Russell Mathews.
Born in Louisville, Kentucky to Luther Clarke Hockensmith and Anna Leona LeGrande, she was predeceased by four brothers and a sister and survived by one brother Donald Hockensmith of Orange County, California as well as eight cherished nephews and nieces.
Aileene had a warm personality, a sharp mind and well-known laughter. She was a friend and supporter of The Collegiate Schools for over a half-century and active patron of the Britten Endowment for Mathematics in honor of her late husband.
She was a gracious hostess, known for her fall series of dinner parties and decades long bridge luncheons, as well as an avid floral designer and recipient of multiple awards during her fifty-five years in garden club.
She, with her late husband, were early members of River Road Presbyterian Church and at her death she was the combination of oldest and longest tenured communicant of that Church.
She will be remembered for her grace, beauty and devotion to her faith and family.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, November 19th at 11:00 am at Cedarfield with private interment at a later time.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Britten Endowment for Mathematics at The Collegiate Schools, 103 N. Mooreland Road, Richmond, Virginia 23229.
