She was the daughter of James Alvin Jones and Alma Harper Jones and the widow of Joseph S. Spivey, Jr. Alma was born on April 3, 1933 in Ashland, Virginia. She spent most of her childhood in Ashland and had fond memories of playing with her sister and cousins there. In 1944, her family moved to Richmond. Alma graduated from Glen Allen High School in 1951 and spent several years working for Prudential Insurance Company and C&P Telephone Company. In 1962 she married Joseph S. Spivey, Jr. They lived in Chesterfield County for 24 years before relocating to Goochland County. In retirement, Alma and Joe volunteered with Meals on Wheels, and were active in Bon Air Christian Church, where they were members for over 50 years.
Alma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sister, Virginia Boardman. She is survived by her sons, Joseph S. Spivey, III of Manakin Sabot and Thomas C. Spivey of Charlottesville, as well as several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 13, 2023 at 12:30 p.m. at Bon Air Christian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Meals on Wheels or Bon Air Christian Church.
