

McMULLIN, Betty Compton, age 84, died peacefully on January 24, 2013 in Richmond, Virginia. Betty grew up in Lexington, Kentucky, the first daughter of five children born to Jewel and Robert Compton. She was graduated with honors from Henry Clay High School, University of Kentucky, Virginia Commonwealth University. She taught mathematics for more than 40 years, beginning her career as a math educator in Louisville, Kentucky. She taught at University of Richmond for 20 years as one of the first women faculty, Douglas Freeman High School, and later served as math superintendent for County of Henrico school system. Betty was a community volunteer and math tutor, including serving on the County of Henrico School Board, Public Library Board, and as founding member of the Mathematics and Science Innovation Center. Betty will be remembered by many as a champion golf and Bridge player. She won countless tournaments, including Club Champ several times at Richmond Country Club. Betty was predeceased by her husband of more than 50 years, William Burke McMullin. She is survived by their three children, Geoff McMullin (Mel) of Atlanta, Ga., Keith McMullin (Marty) of Richmond, Sally Magarity (Jake) of Richmond; five grandchildren, Charlotte McMullin, Emily Grigsby, Caroline Grigsby, James McMullin, Matthew Eldridge; three sisters, Peggy Moberly, Sarah Lewis, Linda Horning. She will be remembered by her many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends as loyal and caring and the person you could count on to do the right thing. A memorial service in honor of her remarkable life will be held on Monday, January 28, at 11 a.m. at Lakewood Manor in the Simms Center, 1900 Lauderdale Drive.
