

ASHWORTH, Charles Winston, 78, of Henrico County, Va., died Sunday, October 6, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents, Winston and Ella Mae Duncan Ashworth; and his son, Charles Winston Ashworth II "Winston." He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Algene L. Ashworth. He is also survived by his first wife and mother of his children, Joan D. Cowan; their daughters, Lesa C. Ashworth and Sherry M. Huffine; five grandchildren, Leslie Ashworth, Tiffany and Mark Huffine, Charles Winston Ashworth III "Chad" and Brandon Ashworth.
Charles was born in Ashville, N.C. and lived his early years in Brevard, N.C. He later, with his parents, moved to Knoxville and then on to Oak Ridge, Tenn. Upon graduation from Oak Ridge High School in 1953, Charles joined the Marines and completed basic training at Paris Island, S.C. He served in Korea with the First Marine Division Headquarters Motor Transport Unit from December 1953 until March 1955 and thereafter, various other assignments until his honorable discharge, July 1956 and inactive status until 1961 when he received his formal honorable discharge. He remained a Marine "at heart" for the rest of his life.
Upon return to Oak Ridge, he enrolled in the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and received a Bachelor's of Science in Agriculture. In 1962, he accepted a position with the Virginia Department of Health in Richmond as a milk sanitarian. In 1971, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received a Master's Degree in Public Health Administration. Thereafter he held various administrative positions with the Virginia Department of Health in Richmond, Va. until his retirement in 1996. He enjoyed football, NASCAR races and fishing but his greatest joy was lending a helping hand to family and friends.
There will be a viewing Wednesday, October 9, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Parham Chapel, Woody's Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd., Richmond, Va., where a funeral ceremony will be held Thursday, October 10, at 1 p.m. Burial at Westhampton Memorial Park, 10000 Patterson Ave., Richmond, Va.
